L-theanine: what is it?

L-theanine is an amino acid found in the tea plant root. It is then transported to the tea leaves, where it becomes concentrated. It is found in high quantities in green tea, in particular. Discovered in 1949, it is best known for its relaxing effect on the body.

Benefits.

Numerous studies have been conducted on L-theanine and agree on its effect on:

  1. stress
  2. attention and responsiveness
  3. sleep quality
  4. the immune system

L-theanine has several different effects on the body. First, it helps the brain create alpha waves (brain waves associated with relaxation practices such as meditation, for example), thus helping us relax. It also acts on our reactions to stress by mimicking an inhibitory neurotransmitter called GABA, which blocks excitatory reactions in the brain: we therefore observe a reduction in anxiety and stress.
By influencing certain neurotransmitters, notably by increasing dopamine and regulating serotonin, L-theanine will create a feeling of well-being. L-theanine will modulate our mood and optimize our learning and concentration abilities. Its calming effect also improves the quality of sleep.
Finally, its stimulating properties on the immune system have also been recognized.

Fact or fiction?

Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world, after water.

Info: It's not coffee, but tea that is the most consumed commodity across countries. In 2020, global consumption was 6.3 billion kg and is expected to reach 7.4 billion kg by 2025.

Side effects.

Theanine is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under 6 years of age.

Fact or fiction?

Theine and L-theanine mean the same thing.

Hoax. L-Theanine is one of the main active ingredients in tea, along with caffeine (theine) and catechins. The molecule of theine is the same as that of caffeine, although they don't act on the body in quite the same way, with the stimulating effect being more evened out over time for theine. Often confused with theine, L-theanine is the main amino acid found in tea leaves.
